Vector Microstock: Power Rankings – August 2011

by Eli Morris on September 12, 2011

Here are my vector micostock sales rankings for August 2011. I can’t believe it has been eight months since my last published rankings. A lot has changed, and a lot has stayed the same. My overall monthly earnings have stayed pretty constant in each month of 2011. It seems like when one site slows down, another gets better.

What has changed the most for my vector microstock earnings in the past eight months? 123rf and Deposit Photos were a wonderful surprise! Both started finally producing good money. I’m not sure what changed. On a negative note, Dreamstime and iClipart really slowed down for my and my vector sales.

As always, the main factor in my rankings is income. The best selling sites get the best ranking, plain and simple. However, other factors like customer service, ease of uploading, and statistics offered also contribute to the rankings if it is close or a tie on earnings.

Last month’s ranking (LM) is included next to the rank. My last rankings were published in January 2011, so the “last month” ranking will actually be for this past January.

Vector Microstock: Power Rankings – August 2011

Rank* Site Comments
iStockphoto 1 (1)iStockphoto Shutterstock Shutterstock is still my best site. Still a great site for newbies and veterans.

iStockphoto 2(2)iStockphoto iStockphoto iStock still has a lot of artists leaving, but sales have seemed to hit a new (albeit lower) plateau.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -
iStockphoto 3 (3)iStockphoto ClipartOf Sales on ClipArtOf stayed about the same. August gave me over $600 in sales here, and I’m not complaining! This site is a little more selective in who they allow to contribute, but if you can get in, it is a great site!

iStockphoto 4 (4)iStockphoto Vectorstock Vectorstock earnings have been going down just a little bit each month. Still they are still my fourth best earner. I love how I can just send them my vector files in large groups, and they add all the keywords free of charge!

iStockphoto 5 (5)iStockphoto CanStockPhoto CanStock has remained constant after exploding on the vector scene in late 2010. In August, I made $390 here.

iStockphoto 6 (9)iStockphoto Veer Veer has been improving almost every month of 2011! I see they do a lot of advertising, and I see only good things in my future here. They have good payouts.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -
7 (NA)iStockphotoiStockphoto Deposit Photos WOW! Deposit Photos has really taken off! I found them spring. They went from just a few downloads per month to an average of $225 per month the last four months! Their upload process isn’t too bad, and they are pretty loose on what they accept.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -
iStockphoto 8 (6)iStockphoto Fotolia Fotolia took a little dip this month, but is still a reliable seller. They are still a little pickier than other sites, but get a lot of traffic.

iStockphoto 9 (14)iStockphotoiStockphoto 123rf Another great surprise! I brought them up here.

iStockphoto 10 (11)iStockphoto BigStock Since BigStock started working more with Shutterstock, sales have improved. I’ve seen a lot more advertising from them too. That always helps get new buyers. A lot of their new advertising is going right at getting iStock customers.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -
iStockphoto 11 (7)iStockphoto Graphic Leftovers Sales have slowed down and I’m not quite sure why. They have gotten a lot stricter on what type of files they accept, and have some strange guidelines. Hopefully they stay relevant, as a I really like how they treat their artists.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -
iStockphoto 12 (8)iStockphoto iClipart I’m not sure why sales have slowly gone down since January. Sales are still decent (I made $130 in August), and their upload process is eay.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -
iStockphoto 12 (10)iStockphoto Dreamstime Their inconvenient and slow upload process has made me completely stop uploading new content. This probably is why my sales have gone down. If you have the patience of Job, you can probably make money here.

These bottom 7 vector microstock sites are MUCH slower in sales. I wanted to still include them though in my Power Rankings. (123rf and CanStock used to be down here, and now look at them, all grown up) Hopefully some of them will continue to grow in sales!

iStockphoto 13 (12)iStockphoto Crestock Sales are getting slowly better, but not by much. I made $48 in August. Just missed the $50 payout. : )

iStockphoto 14 (15)iStockphoto Stockfuel Made just $16 in August here. No customer support or replies to my emails.

I stumbled across this blog from Google, I have been designing for the past 6 years and just starting to consider working more on royalty base rather than one time commission. This could be just it. When I googled, it seems like these microstock websites favor photograph more. It’s good to know vector work can work too.

Karmad,

I’m glad you found vector microstock! Yes, microstock does have way more photos than vectors, but I think the market actually “favors” us vector artists! Good luck!
